Kalimantan Indigenous Film Festival is a non-profit body established to support and develop social documentary filmmaking within the context of indigenous values in preserving culture and voice the rights of indigenous people.

About the Indigenous Film Festival

Indigenous Film Festival has been held since the year 2015, initiated from the grassroots level in Kalimantan, Indonesia. Indigenous Film Festival has evolved from a local event to an international event since last year, 2018. International Indigenous Film Festival has been held annually in Bali, then Bhubaneswar in India, also Kuching in Malaysia. Coming back to where it started, Indigenous Film Festival will be coming real soon to Kalimantan this August as KIFF2019 in the commemoration of World Indigenous People Day.

“Stories That Matter”

With the theme of “stories that matter”, the purpose of this event is to become a platform for regional and international indigenous filmmakers to showcase their work, to form collaboration and networks, and to be able to reach out to a wider audience. All of the submitted films bring voices of the indigenous that is often unheard to the mainstream world - that is why, the theme is “stories that matter”. Indigenous Film Festival is a platform for the “stories that matter” to be told, to inspire, to raise awareness.

Kalimantan Indigenous Film Festival

Kalimantan Indigenous Film Festival / KIFF 2019 will be held on August 9-11, in Palangka Raya (Central Kalimantan). KIFF 2019 will showcase 24 inspiring indigenous films, and most importantly — created by indigenous filmmakers.

Featuring films about the people and traditions from the indigenous of Kalimantan island, Dayak - created by talented young Dayaknese filmmakers themselves, among with other ethnics of Indonesia and Asia.

Karungut adalah musik tradisional dari Kalimantan Tengah bukan hanya sebuah lagu, tetapi juga merupakan cerita tentang orang Dayak.

MELAWAN DIAM UNTUK HUTAN

Melawan Diam Untuk Hutan adalah video yang menunjukkan bagaimana masyarakat berjuang untuk mengamankan akses ke hutan di empat desa di Kecamatan Banama Tingang, Kabupaten Pulang Pisau, Kalimantan Tengah. Penduduk desa akhirnya menerima sertifikat Perhutanan Sosial yang memungkinkan mereka untuk mengelola hutan mereka secara berkelanjutan.

GENERASI KAYU LAPUK

Hutan Papua yang luas menghilang, termasuk di dalam Taman Nasional Lorentz, kawasan konservasi terbesar di Asia Tenggara, yang telah diakui sebagai Situs Warisan Dunia alami oleh UNESCO karena lanskapnya yang luar biasa dan keanekaragaman hayati serta keanekaragaman budayanya. Sebelum jalan raya Trans-Papua dibangun melalui daerah ini, daerah ini tetap merupakan hutan belantara murni yang meliputi lebih dari 2,5 juta hektar di mana banyak pohon berharga, burung eksotis, dan hewan hidup tanpa gangguan. Tetapi sejak jalan raya dibangun, pohon-pohon dengan cepat menghilang. Penebang liar bekerja secara terbuka di sepanjang jalan setiap hari, menebang pohon dan memotongnya menjadi papan, yang kemudian diangkut dengan truk ke gunung untuk dijual di pasar Potikelek di Kota Wamena. Jalan ke Wamena melewati pos keamanan, di mana setiap pengemudi truk diharuskan menyerahkan beberapa papan sebagai bentuk pajak tidak resmi.

DAYAK BREAKTHROUGH (AWARENESS OF NATURE THROUGH ECOTOURISM)

Mengisahkan tentang beberapa suku Dayak yang memiliki terobosan baru untuk menghidupi keluarga dan tetap menjaga lingkungan alam sekitar. Dari illegal logging sampai pelaku wisata. Dokumenter ini adalah sebuah apresiasi kepada masyarakat yang berkontribusi ke ekowisata, juga sebagai inspirasi untuk mayarakat Dayak Kalangan muda.

KAYAN : BEYOND THE RINGS

Film ini menunjukkan kebenaran di balik tajuk berita negatif media tentang orang-orang Kayan di desa-desa yang disebut 'leher panjang' di Thailand Utara. Media menggambarkan sudut tertentu, tetapi tidakkah kita harus membiarkan orang-orang Kayan memutuskan apakah mereka ingin orang mengunjungi mereka atau tidak?

Sebuah film karya Chentei tentang neneknya dan bagaimana dia menanam millet-nya. Film ini memberikan beberapa wawasan tentang tanaman tahan stres, nilai pertanian tradisional dan pengetahuan yang melekat dalam masyarakat.

SHOT AWAKE : THE MAKING OF CHANGLANGSU’S NEW LOG DRUM

Setelah jeda lima puluh tujuh tahun, Shajung Morung dari desa Konyak, Changlangshu memutuskan untuk mengukir drum kayu baru untuk mereka sendiri. Meskipun persiapan untuk tugas dimulai pada tahun 1999, hanya pada tahun 2013 ketika mereka dapat menjadi tuan rumah acara akbar mendapatkan drum log baru mereka.

TIMOTIUS

Usually called ‘Bang’ Timotius, having knowledge in the field of computers and audio visuals, has been successful in making creative videos. He’s from Dayak Seberuang tribe of West Kalimantan, he made a film about his tribe’s culture called NGERA’. He also volunteered in making professional videos, including short films, music videos, profile videos and others. He’s using social media as his platform to showcase his video works — BG TIM.

MARSELINA EVY

Evy, from Dayak Desa Sesat in Sintang Regency (West Kalimantan) is the Co-Founder of the LANGKAU ONET Foundation. She is the screenwriter for the film BETANGKAN DARAH. She also works as an officer in news and reports at the Public Relations Government of Sintang Regency. She’s very skillful in writing and wrote GAWAI DAYAK DARI BUMI SENENTANG and NGINDUP MENSIA — books on indigenous cultures of Dayak.

JOVIAN CALEB OROH

As a young Dayak filmmaker who is passionate in videography and the beauty of Dayak culture & forests, Jovi decided to start a journey in audio-visual activism through making films. No weapons, no aggressions — only through the power of his lenses, Jovi wants to change the world for the better. His film is MELAWAN DIAM UNTUK HUTAN, a form of audio-visual activism he made dedicated to the forest and indigenous community,

ADITIA IHSAN

Aditia started to getting to know filmmaking while sitting in SMK and often helping local polices to make documentary films or doing documentation for events. Together with his friends from HARIAN SI ANANG, they made a short film called KUKU with Aditia as the producer and director of photography. He’s now active in HARIAN SI ANANG production team & FORUM SINEAS BANUA.

JULIANA KRISTALIA

Juliana is from Dayak Ot Danum tribe and a Dayak Ngaju tribe. Ever since junior high school, Juliana has been interested and involved in videography. While pursuing her bachelor degree at the University of Palangkaraya, she joined RANU WELUM MEDIA as the camera operator and video editor. Ever since, she has been sharing her love of filmmaking with other youths. She had trained youth community in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, on filmmaking focusing on the ANTI CIGARETTE SMOKE CAMPAIGN. With her love for Dayak culture and filmmaking, she also travels to different villages in Kalimantan to film and showcase the story of indegenous people. She’s the editor of the film DAYAK BREAKTHROUGH.

FLORENTINI DELLY

An 18 years old from Dayak Simpang tribe, Delly came from Tahak Village (Simpang Hulu Subdistrict, Ketapang Regency, West Kalimantan). She is one of the initiators for the formation of SAKOLAH ADAT ARUS KUALANT with her older sister. In 2014, together they formed non-formal education activities in Tahak and Sungaibansi village based on culture, tradition, environment and literacy. Delly is a multitalented artist, she sings, dances and plays Dayak traditional instrument Sapek. She goes to her village every holidays to teach the kids in her customary school where they learn about traditional games, arts and crafts, and also literacy.

SUMARNI LAMAN
A young filmmaker and environmental activist from the Dayak Ngaju tribe, Sumarni strives to educate and empower young people to care more about their environment and culture through filmmaking and social media content. She’s the coordinator of YOUTHACT KALIMANTAN that initiated THE HEARTLAND PROJECT and YOUTH FORUM. Along with RANU WELUM MEDIA, she made a film about the tradition from Dayak culture, KARUNGUT.

SUKMAWATY

A university student from IAIN Palangka Raya, Sukmawaty has knowledge of cinematic photography, scriptwriting, audio visual and film editing. She won first place in the ‘Kirab Pemuda 2018’ event with her first film DI ATAS MILENIALITAS, a film with the theme of the local wisdom of Dayak culture in her area, written by her and produced with her community KOMIK PRODUCTION. She won first place again in a public service ad competition with her work: DIET INFORMASI, an ad about Hoax, held by the TVRI Central Kalimantan TV station.
