In commemoration of International Day of Forests 2022, Youth Act Network campaigned for One Tree One person and encouraged people to plant trees. On 19-21 March 2022, there are 12 communities joined the movement and total 3,500 trees have been planted.
We have worked closely with BPDAS Kahayan to provide tree seeds for you to plant. There are total 3,000 baby trees are ready right now. There are 6 species of Kalimantan endemic trees that you can choose.

We are excited to present you an e-book entitled INDIGENOUS DIGITAL STORYTELLING: How To Make Your Own Media Training. This e-book is one of the indigenous media training kits produced by Ranu Welum with the purpose of indigenous filmmakers’ multiplication.
After 30 minutes of sailing by wooden boat, we finally arrived at the tree planting site. In the past, people used the location for farming. But along with the explosion of the buffalo population, which continues to destroy rice, they finally choose to move to other farm locations, making the location like a dry savanna. That's why the indigenous people of Pulai Patai village chose the location for restoration, to re-green the area and protect it from abrasion.
Not only we have five films/videos from five different indigenous communities, but there are total 191 indigenous youth have been trained on how to use media/phone to do a digital documentation.
In the training, we highlighted the role of social media in shaping the culture and public opinion, and how to use it for the advantage of indigenous communities. There are also other trainings conducted in other countries that are part of the projects.
This training is the part of Ranu Welum’s action project with UNESCO and Asia Indigenous People Pact to empower youth so they may be able to address the indigenous rights issues through digital use. After the training finished, there were five projects from four countries respectively selected to receive seed grants. Here are their profiles.

Within one month of our flood relief mission, we were able to raise around 50 million IDR to distribute more than 2,000 packages of food, milk, diapers, and medicines. We mobilized our local youth volunteers to assist the villagers and distribute meals and logistics. In total, we supported nine affected villages in 6 regencies, including Palangka Raya city, East Barito Regency, Murung Raya Regency, Katingan Regency, East Kotawaringin Regency, and Pulang Pisau regency.
We now are accepting application for INDIGENOUS YOUTH DIGITAL STORYTELLING:Training4Trainers!! This program aims to support indigenous young storytellers from these respective countries; Indonesia, Malaysia, India and Bangladesh, to be the grassroots trainers on journalism, filmmaking and documenteries of indigenous knowledge and right issues. Online training/masterclass, grant opportunities and international networks will be provides for those who are selected!
In commemoration of International Day of the World Indigenous Peoples 2021, Kalimantan International Indigenous Film Festival - KIIFF is coming back with the theme“Earth Protector: Heal The Land, Heal The Future”. For years, indigenous people have been the guardians of the earth and the forest, and we believe that their stories must be continued to pass onto the global community.
As this month is a celebration for indigenous communities all over the world, to commemorate the International Day of World Indigenous Peoples’, we hosted our first ever Virtual Art Exhibition & Live Performance.
On July 17th 2021, for the first time since being launched in 2016 at the corner of a small café in Palangkaraya, Youth Act held an annual consultation with 20 young people participated as the representatives of their regencies and provinces. The consultation ran for 4 hours. The agenda was to build connection, choose the members of governance and focal persons in regency level and also draft the follow up action for another year.
"We are ready to face another fire and haze season in Kalimantan," said Oli, the headmaster of PKBM Candra Kirana, to our team during our monitoring visit to the haze shelter that we built in their school. "We recently installed air conditioning in our haze shelter, so when the haze hits our city again, the room can be immediately used for shelter. We also frequently use the shelter for learning media to teach the students about the dangers of particulate 2.5".
We have received over forty film submissions from more than twenty nations/tribes in Asia Pacific and we are blown away by the enthusiasm shown by these indigenous filmmakers/storytellers. Our selection committee have carefully curated the films and we are glad to announce that eighteen films have been selected as the official selections of KIIFF2021.
On 29th June 2021, Ranu Welum Foundation held a webinar entitled “SMART VOICE: Digital Offline Learning Kit (Alternative Solution For Teachers in Remote Areas)”. This webinar is a follow-up to the Smart Voice project supported by AIYP and UNESCO which have been presented in regional and international level. This webinar was joined by participants which consisted of mostly educators, education activists, education foundations, local government and the last but not least’s teachers from remote areas who were enthusiasts to know more about this learning kit.
It took a while for us to find young people who were willing to be at the frontline to battle the forest fires. However, these fifteen people have shown determination and courage to finish the training.
Ranu Welum conducted a webinar entitled “Discussing Environmental Issues in Kalimantan through Youth Perspective.” This webinar was set up as part of our leadership program, which aimed to equip the Kalimantan Green Warriors community to understand more about the issues.
